Martin Weinstein is currently the Executive Director of Bay Area Community Resources, a nonprofit whose mission is to promote the healthy development of individuals, families and communities, to encourage service and volunteerism and to help build community. BACR provides direct services in the areas of substance abuse and mental health, national service, community health and youth development. BACR currently employs 280 staff members, has the active participation of over 1,000 student and adult volunteers, and serves over 20,000 individuals and families. During the past two decades, Martin has been a leader within the organization and the community, and has led the development of BACR into a dynamic and highly diversified nonprofit agency.
In 1984, Mr. Weinstein led the organization’s effort to develop and implement the first CBO sponsored after-school program for the West Contra Costa Unified School District. Since that time, and under Mr. Weinstein’s leadership, BACR has been responsible for managing after-school programs in Oakland, San Francisco, San Rafael and East Palo Alto at over forty target schools. In addition, the AmeriCorps programs run by BACR place Corps members at numerous after-school programs of the Bay Area.
Martin has taken the lead in building several significant alliances to better serve Bay Area Communities. These include, for example, the Bay Area Youth Agency Consortium / BAYAC AmeriCorps, the Cesar Chavez Service Learning Alliance and the California AmeriCorps Alliance. Currently, Mr. Weinstein is the Chair Person of the AmeriCorps California Alliance and serves on the Steering Committee of the Voices for National Service and the Oakland Community After School Alliance.
Mr. Weinstein has served on the Board of Directors for the Marin Council of Agencies, the Center for Independent Living and Pathways for Kids, and on the Advisory Board of the Community Foundation Silicon Valley. He has received awards from the American Medical Association, the Marin County School Boards Association and Governor Deukmejian.
Mr. Weinstein holds an undergraduate degree from the Wharton School of Finance, University of Pennsylvania, and earned his MBA from New York University. During the earlier part of his career, he was influencing the public and private sector to improve social outcomes. He served as Vice President for the Urban Research Corporation under the leadership of John Naisbitt, author of Megatrends. Subsequently, he served as Vice President for Pacific Consultants and was principal investigator on a number of national studies.
